Oneonta, NY: The Springbrook Scorpions Special Olympics soccer team, who recently earned a bronze medal as Team NY at the Special Olympics USA Games, will host tryouts on August 7th and 8th from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm. The soccer tryouts and participation on the team are free and open to the public. Tryouts will be held at The School at Springbrook’s soccer field on the organization’s main campus at 105 Campus Drive in Oneonta, NY.

Interested athletes do not need to receive services from Springbrook to participate. This opportunity is available to any athletes eight years of age and older who have been identified by an agency or medical professional as having an intellectual disability; or have a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures; or have significant learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delays which require or have required specially-designed instruction.

Athletes who are interested in attending one of the two tryout sessions must come dressed in the appropriate attire. This includes shorts, a tee shirt, shin guards, and soccer cleats. Athletes should also bring a water bottle. If an individual comes to tryouts but does not have the appropriate attire, they will not be able to participate.

Athletes who join the Springbrook Scorpions soccer program can participate by playing with the traditional soccer team, or by joining the skills team. Practices will begin the week after tryouts, with the team practicing on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 pm-7:30 pm and skills athletes practicing on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm. If an athlete has not played on a Special Olympics team in the past three years, they will need to complete a medical consent form and bring it with them to tryouts. Forms can be found on Springbrook’s website at https://springbrookny.org/files/9915/1878/9027/NEW_Med_and_Con.pdf.
