On Thursday, June 24th, The School at Springbrook honored the Class of 2021. We are pleased to bring you a look at what made this class so special over the coming days and weeks!
Dylan is a candid and expressive young man. Throughout his years at the School at Springbrook’s Golisano Center for Autism, Dylan has become a more focused and task-oriented person and has worked hard to develop his social skills. Dylan enjoys listening and dancing to 90s alternative and rock music. He loves watching videos on his iPad, going on outdoor adventures, and watching Disney movies. Dylan is planning to attend a day program and find exciting new adventures. Dylan excels at socializing with others, has improved his ability to convey his needs and wants, and has expanded his repertoire of interests.
Because of Dylan’s positive attitude and willingness to try new skills, The School at Springbrook is proud to present Dylan with the School at Springbrook award for Most Resilient.
When Tyler isn’t hiking the nature trail or watching his favorite show, The Wiggles, you can find him spending time with his brother Dylan. Tyler is a passionate and quick-minded young man who enjoys almost anything where he gets to make choices. Tyler enjoys puzzles, sorting, art, and has excelled at using prompts and communicating his thoughts and opinions in the classroom. After graduating from the Golisano Center for Autism at The School at Springbrook, Tyler would like to attend a day program to build his knowledge and further master his communication skills. Tyler’s ability to step outside of his comfort zone and explore his capabilities has brought him great success. He has a great future ahead of him. Tyler has a great curatorial eye and is a collector of gadgets, gizmos, and thingamabobs. With this in mind, we are proud to present Tyler with The School at Springbrook award for Most Observant.
Dustin is a winner of the 2021 Office of the New York State Comptroller Achievement Award. This award is given to a student in recognition of their hard work, dedication, and success in academics. Dustin is hard-working and goal-oriented. He enjoys hanging out with his family and going shopping. Dustin is an energetic and persistent young man with a passion for working toward his goals. During his time at The School at Springbrook, Dustin has shined at appropriately expressing his emotions and learning to count money. Dustin enjoys playing video games, listening to country music, watching football, or reading a good book. After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Dustin wants to get a job at a local grocery store or videogame store in his community.

Keith is determined. He happily engages with his peers and uses a variety of strategies to communicate how he feels. Keith loves to keep busy. He enjoys being active, riding the tricycle, swimming, and just moving around. Keith is quiet but a personable young man. In his time at The School at Springbrook, Keith has improved his ability to stay focused and be more patient. Outside of the classroom, you can find Keith singing, using his camera, or shopping online. He enjoys making wish lists on Amazon of all the things he would like to purchase. After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Keith plans to stay with the Springbrook community where he can continue to shine. Narendara Lachmansingh Jr.
Narendra is a winner of the 2021 State of New York Office of the Attorney General Triple “C” Award. This award is given to a student in recognition of their courage, which will assist them in meeting the challenges ahead; their remarkable commitment to bettering themselves, their school, and their community, which makes them a role model to others. Narendara Lachmansingh Jr. (Or better known as J.R.) is one of this year’s winners!
Kind-hearted, determined, and charismatic are just a few of JR’s characteristics. In his time at The School at Springbrook GEMS Program, he has excelled with his communication, speech, and safety skills, and has gained a great sense of independence. JR enjoys completing tasks outside the classroom, likes being close with friends and family, and is always ecstatic to share his love for music. JR has been the DJ for a handful of class parties and events and has so much fun! JR has already moved to a Springbrook Community Home and is excited to use the skills he has worked on to find a job in the community. JR has quite the personality, and many friends and staff at Springbrook share that their favorite memories with JR usually include his singing and dancing when he DJs.

Justin loves spending time with his family, and some of his favorite trips are to his grandmother’s house. When he isn’t visiting with family, you can find Justin listening to music and enjoying a good book. After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Justin intends to stay active with the Springbrook community and potentially move to a Springbrook Community Home. Justin is observant, smart, and a compassionate young man. His creativity and love of science stem from his attentive and inquisitive nature. From reading books to listening to music, Justin is always ready to discover and explore all the great things life has to offer. He is extremely friendly and loves hugs.

During her years in the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Nicole has excelled at communication, conversation, and building her ability to think creatively. Nicole is a friendly, independent, and dedicated young woman. Outside of the classroom, you’ll find Nicole listening to music, bowling, or playing her crocodile piano. Nicole’s musical talent shines in music class, where she rocks the drums. One of Nicole’s former teachers, Marian Roselli, shared, “Nicole truly rocks out on the drums, playing nearly any beat and keeping it. It was always amazing to watch her in music because she is so talented.” Nicole has already moved to Springbrook Community Home where she plans to enjoy her her independence.

Jessica is motivated and inspiring. Jessica has made tremendous progress with using communication pictures to tell others what she needs and has learned several other skills to help her safely navigate her environment. Jessica enjoys music class and speech class in school, where she can play instruments and build upon her communication skills. Outside of class, Jessica enjoys listening to music, going for walks and soaking up some sun (in fashion), rides in the van that usually end with some chicken nuggets (her favorite), and spending time with her family and friends. After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Jessica wants to spend time with her family. Jessica has grown into an independent and determined young woman with the support of her staff, her teachers, and her family. We are so proud of her and very excited about what the future may hold for Jessica.

Since coming to Springbrook, Stephanie has increased both her scheduling and transitioning skills. She is a funny, caring, and spontaneous young woman with a lot of creativity. In class, Stephanie enjoys art and project time and sitting on the carpet looking through books. Outside of the classroom, Stephanie enjoys music (her favorite being Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga), playing on the trampoline, and soaking up some sun—just like her sister Jessica! House manager Kaitlin Gullow had this to share: “Stephanie is a truly passionate and caring young lady. She likes to see her friends having fun and laughing at her jokes. I will miss her beautiful smile and incredible aura.” After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Stephanie wants to spend time with her family. Congratulations, Stephanie, on a job well done!

Chazz is a friendly, hard-working, and determined young man. He enjoys school and is happy to be working on anything, especially if it may give him a quick laugh (he can be quite the prankster). Chazz has made tremendous progress in his time at the School at Springbrook and has worked hard on his communication, comprehension, and mobility skills. Outside of school, you’ll find Chazz spending time with his family and enjoying one of his favorite activities – playing with trains. He is fascinated with trains, and many of his favorite books and movies feature trains (The Polar Express takes number one). After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Chazz plans on attending a day habilitation program to further build upon his skills and receive in-home services.

Friendly, persistent, and outspoken are just a few of Sharon’s characteristics. In her time at The School at Springbrook, she has excelled with her communication and has learned how to share what she wants by using picture cards. In school, she enjoys music class and using her sensory tools, and outside the classroom likes spending time with family and friends. Sharon enjoys being outside and being active within the community (she’d be happy to tell you about it). After graduating from the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Sharon plans to attend a day habilitation program to keep building her skills and also plans to spend a lot of time with her family. With the skills and tools Sharon has developed at the School at Springbrook and her positivity and persistence, Sharon will go on to do great things.

Avi is full of spirit and positivity. He happily engages with his peers and has become a role model for his fellow students. When Avi first came to Springbrook, he began working on skills to better his patience, cope with changes, and be successful when attention was not focused on him. In school, Avi enjoys group activities, math, and music. Avi is very musical and loves to sing and play his guitar! Outside the classroom, you can find Avi socializing and helping others, practicing his guitar, visiting with friends and family, and shopping for new movies to add to his collection. After graduating from the Golisano Center for Autism at The School at Springbrook, Avi will be going to Hamaspik Residential Services to be closer to his family. Best wishes from Springbrook on wherever life takes you, Avi. So many staff members will miss your positive energy, charisma, smile, and helping hand.

Joseph is an inquisitive and dedicated young man. During his time at The School at Springbrook, Joseph has become more focused and now completes many tasks independently. He enjoys math and technology, and in his free time, he enjoys track and competes in Special Olympics track competitions. He loves watching movies (in multiple languages), going to the theatre, and looking at maps and books. After graduation from the Golisano Center for Autism at The School at Springbrook, Joseph will be looking to live an independent lifestyle where he can find a job that suits him. Joseph has excelled at applying himself, efficiently communicating his wants and needs, and reading and following a written schedule.

During his years in the GEMS Program at The School at Springbrook, Brendan has excelled at socializing, expressing himself, and communicating his needs, wants, and emotions with others. Brendan is a charismatic, calm, and composed young man. You’ll find Brendan taking walks, spending time outdoors, or relaxing with schoolmates and staff outside of the classroom. Brendan is also known for trying new foods and has found quite a few new favorites during his time at the School at Springbrook. Brendan has already moved to a Springbrook Community Home and will be attending a day habilitation program to continue working on his skills. Brendan is dedicated to his goals, overcoming challenges, and makes it easy to get to know him.
