Springbrook CEO Patricia E. Kennedy was awarded an honorary Degree of Humane Letters during the 2026 Spring Commencement Ceremony for the School of Education, Human Ecology and Sports Studies at SUNY Oneonta.

The honor recognizes Ms. Kennedy’s decades of visionary leadership, commitment to inclusive support services, and dedication to strengthening communities and opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

During the ceremony, Alberto J.F. Cardelle, President of SUNY Oneonta, praised Ms. Kennedy for embodying the values of the SUNY system.

“Ms. Kennedy is SUNY alumni embodying the SUNY system’s commitment to access, equity, and opportunity,” President Cardelle said. “She is a visionary leader in community development and individualized inclusive support services.

Ms. Kennedy accepted the honor with gratitude, dedicating the award to her family and the countless individuals with developmental disabilities she has supported throughout her career.

“I am incredibly honored to be here today to accept this degree,” Ms. Kennedy shared. “I dedicate this award to my wonderful family and the individuals with developmental disabilities who I have known and supported throughout my career.”

Addressing graduates from the School of Education, Human Ecology and Sports Studies, Kennedy delivered a message centered on purpose, connection, and authenticity.

Her first core message challenged graduates to envision the impact they can have on the world around them.

“Imagine a child who discovers their voice, literally and figuratively, for the very first time. A community where families thrive and live in harmony. A sports field where teamwork turns strangers into lifelong friends,” Ms. Kennedy said. “This should not just be a dream, but a vision that can become reality. This is a future you are prepared to create.”

She connected that vision directly to the graduates’ chosen fields of study.

“To education majors, teaching is not simply the transference of knowledge, but it is about inspiring others and creating connections that last a lifetime,” she said. “In Human Ecology, we recognize that our well-being is deeply connected to our communities and environments, and that even small, deliberate changes can transform lives. In Sports Management, sports are more than competition and they can and should be intentional in developing unity and resilience.”

Ms. Kennedy’s second message focused on individuality and self-confidence, quoting Yoko Ono: “You change the world by being yourself.”

Encouraging graduates to embrace their individuality, Ms. Kennedy reminded them that their unique perspectives and experiences are what the world needs most.

“No one else has your unique experience, talent, perspective, voice, creativity, empathy, ideas, or idiosyncrasies,” she said. “The world doesn’t need another copy, it needs you.”

Ms. Kennedy concluded by honoring not only the graduates, but also the families, faculty, and communities that supported them along the way.

“To the Class of 2026, though your disciplines differ, your mission is shared,” Ms. Kennedy said. “Together, you can uplift, connect, and inspire. Today is not just the end of your studies, but the beginning of your impact. Go forward celebrating your uniqueness and with a clear vision. You won’t regret it. Congratulations!”

The honorary doctorate serves as a meaningful recognition of Ms. Kennedy’s lifelong commitment to inclusion, advocacy, leadership, and empowering others to thrive within their communities.
