Finding His Rhythm: Dallas Carman’s Path to Independence

Each morning that Dallas Carman arrives at The Ford on Main in downtown Oneonta, New York, he’s ready to get to work. From 9 to 11 a.m., he makes his way from the third floor down, sweeping stairwells and hallways, mopping floors, and polishing lobby windows until they shine. His dedication and quick pace make him a valued member of the janitorial team, where he works alongside Springbrook staff and The Ford on Main’s maintenance crew.

Dallas is supported by a collaborative team that includes Rhiannon Ham, Assistant Director of Community Services, Supported Employment; Amber Henriksen, Employment Specialist; Kevin Morris, Springbrook’s Director of Facilities; and Rob from the Ford on Main’s maintenance staff. Together, they provide the resources, encouragement, and guidance that help Dallas thrive. “Dallas continues to strive for as much independence as possible,” says Amber. “He’s very good at what he does and confident in his ability to do the job in front of him, and I think that’s rare. I’ve seen tremendous growth in his work initiative and ambition.”

Before joining The Ford on Main, Dallas gained experience through several positions, including janitorial work at All Star Baseball Village and agricultural work at Lucky Duck Farm, where he enjoyed the fast-paced environment. He also worked at Springbrook’s Oneonta campus, where he took pride in helping to train a fellow employee who now works in the Day Habilitation building.

Outside of work, Dallas keeps busy with a variety of interests. He plays basketball and soccer with the Scorpions, Springbrook’s Special Olympics team, where he serves as the soccer goalie this season. He also enjoys walking, riding his electric scooter to Speedway for a Big Gulp of Dr. Pepper, and playing Roblox.

Looking ahead, Dallas hopes to live independently with a roommate and make more friends. Rhiannon shares that one of his long-term goals is to earn his driver’s license which is a milestone that would mark another step toward independence for Dallas.

When asked what he enjoys most, Dallas doesn’t hesitate: “I enjoy working for Springbrook,” he says with a smile. It’s clear that the feeling is mutual. Amber adds, “The team around him has worked tirelessly to help Dallas get the independence he deserves.”

Through his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and supportive network, Dallas is charting his own path forward with one clean hallway, one big goal, and plenty of dedication at a time.
