For the past three years, Alana McCann has been an essential part of Springbrook’s Sidney Plains and Chenango region community homes, where her dedication and compassion have made her an invaluable asset. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Community Homes Department, she plays a critical role in the lives of residents, ensuring their health and well-being while simultaneously supporting the staff around her.

Alana joined Springbrook in October of 2021, bringing a wealth of experience with her. Jess Weston, the Director of Nursing, reflects on the seamless transition: “It was a wonderful transition for us. Alana has supported the Sidney Plains region for three years and made a big difference.” Not only did she adapt quickly, but she also recognized the growing needs in the Chenango region, particularly in Oxford and Norwich Day Habilitation. Her keen eye for identifying areas that need attention has been pivotal in maintaining the level of care that residents receive.

Jessi LeVeille, a registered nurse at Springbrook, speaks highly of Alana’s approach to challenges. Jessi shares, “Alana takes on challenges head-on and goes above and beyond, especially with new locations. She takes pride in her work, particularly during audits when she steps up to take on extra duties.” Alana’s commitment to excellence extends to her work ethic and genuine care for the people around her.

One of the most remarkable examples of Alana’s dedication came when a resident needed to attend a family event in Florida. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are not permitted to administer medications outside New York State, meaning a nurse had to accompany the resident on the trip. Alana volunteered to travel with the resident without hesitation to ensure their medical needs were met. This kind of selflessness exemplifies Alana’s commitment to her role every day.

In addition to her deep care for residents, Alana is a reliable and invaluable resource for her colleagues. “Alana is always willing to help, regardless of the challenges,” says Gordon Mumbulo, Assistant Director of Community Homes Compliance. Her ability to maintain staffing, assist with appointments, and ensure coverage for her team is just one aspect of her dedication.

Jessica Symonds, another Springbrook RN, shares that “Alana is quick, organized, and efficient. She makes a positive difference everywhere she goes, and we are lucky to have her!” Her willingness to step in and take care of tasks, often before others even realize they need to be done, is another testament to her strong work ethic. As colleague Hannah Hilt fondly notes, “If you feel like you’re falling behind and are stressed out, you turn around, and Alana probably already took care of it for you!”

Alana’s day starts early—often as early as 3:30 A.M. “I like to keep busy,” she says with a smile. “I’m an early bird, and I get a lot of work done in the mornings.” This routine includes everything from bedroom checks to preparing for audits at the beginning of the month. The switch from paper to electronic documentation has been a significant adjustment, but Alana remains flexible and efficient, ensuring smooth transitions in her work processes.

“The people really keep me going,” Alana shares. “One of the residents knows it’s me when I come in, and the connection we’ve built always lights up their smile.” This connection drives her passion and commitment, motivating her to work extra shifts when needed.

Alana offers advice for anyone interested in pursuing a career like hers: “Always strive for your best, and you never know if you can do something unless you try.” Her respect for her colleagues shines through when she adds, “I appreciate the DSPs, and without them, none of this would work.”

When Alana isn’t working, you might find her enjoying crime shows on Investigation Discovery or Lifetime movies, relaxing on the couch after a busy day.

Alana McCann’s unwavering dedication to the residents and team, tireless work ethic, and compassion make her an integral part of Springbrook. Her commitment to caring for and supporting the growing needs in the community homes leaves a lasting impact on everyone around her.
