The students and staff at Susquehanna House recently celebrated the birthday of one of their favorite authors, Dr. Seuss. Students began the festivities by coloring pictures of their favorite Dr. Seuss characters to put on the bulletin board, and during the week, created Dr. Seuss-themed crafts to go along with their favorite stories. Staff and students also read Dr. Seuss books and watched videos and movies.
The week’s highlight was a Dr. Seuss-inspired lunch of green eggs and ham with English muffins and hash browns. Stella was extremely happy with the lunch and kept saying, “I love it. I love it.” Students made delicious snacks like Cat in the Hat red and white striped hats using strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, and a popsicle stick, Fish in the Bowl made with blue Jell-O and Swedish Fish. There was also Put Me in the Zoo polka dot cookies, and The Lorax cotton candy trees (and Mia dressed up as the Lorax). The Best Nest was celebrated with students painting a birdhouse, and Yertle the Turtle, with each student making one-of-a-kind turtle crafts.
Everyone had a fantastic time! Springbrook Recreational Therapist Laurie Spicer shares, “COVID may keep us away from some of fun we are used to, but we at Susquehanna House can make fun that is funny, just look at our celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.” Laurie is a Dr. Seuss fan herself and compares the situation to a quote from Dr. Seuss, “I know it is wet, and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.”
