Springbrook announces the opening of its 2019 Springbrook Scorpions Special Olympics Track and Field season.

Interested athletes are invited to join the Springbrook Scorpions Track & Field team for its first practice of the season on Wednesday, February 6. There will be no tryouts for the team. Practice starts at 4:00 pm in The School at Springbrook gymnasium, located at 105 Campus Drive (North Entrance), in Oneonta. Athletes are asked to arrive in shoes appropriate for running, shorts, wind pants or sweat pants, and a t-shirt. Please be advised that all athletes who join the Springbrook Scorpions are required to bring a signed Special Olympics medical consent form with them to the first practice. The form must be signed by a medical professional, and a parent, guardian, or the athlete (if over the age of 18).

The Springbrook Special Olympics Program is open to individuals who are 8-years-old and older, have been identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability, a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures, or face significant learning or vocational challenges resulting from cognitive delays that require specially-designed instruction. Athletes do not need to receive services from Springbrook in order to participate.

For nearly fifty years, Special Olympics has been actively encouraging people with intellectual disabilities throughout the world to participate in sports as a way to discover inner strength, abilities, and skills that they can use both on the playing field and in everyday life. Springbrook has been home to the Scorpions Special Olympics basketball and soccer teams for over 25 years and recently added a track and field team as well. The organization’s participation in the Special Olympics is 100% donor-supported, and is made possible through the financial support from the following generous sponsors: the Russell and Mirabito families, Chobani, The Daily Star, and Maines Paper & Food Services.
