Physical Education Teacher, Jon Philby, Recognized by the Local Community

Adaptive Physical Education teacher, Jon Philby, has been working with students at The School at Springbrook since 2011. He specializes in using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methods that include emphasis on gross motor skills—such as catching, throwing, and hand/eye coordination—as well as goal-driven social and team-engagement strategies.

Like many of the dedicated employees at Springbrook, Jon’s commitment to the people he supports bleeds over into his free time. For over four years, he has volunteered his time as a coach and mentor for the Springbrook Scorpions Special Olympics basketball, soccer, and track and field teams. He says he gets fulfillment from “seeing the athletes compete with responsibility, respect, and joy when they earn medals for their hard work and dedication.” And as if working full-time and volunteering his time wasn’t enough, he was also attending graduate school at SUNY Oneonta. Working with the Springbrook Scholars Program—an academic graduate degree partnership with SUNY Oneonta—he earned his Master’s Degree in Special Education last fall.

Not only has he made quite a name for himself within the Springbrook community, but he was recently recognized as one of Otsego County’s “20 Under 40.” The Otsego County “20 Under 40” program is designed to give recognition to young, local professionals who have made significant contributions to their fields. Jon’s name was one of over sixty people who were anonymously nominated for this local honor. “I am touched by this honor,” he says. “I was never looking for recognition. I do what I do because I enjoy making a difference in the lives of people, no matter if they have a disability or not…I could never have done what I have with Springbrook without the support of my family, my coworkers, and my fellow coaches.”

Jon Philby is among the 1,200 staff members who are committed to ensuring that the organization remains the leader in providing the most innovative supports and services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. We congratulate Jon on his recent success and praise all of the staff members who comprise the Springbrook team.
