Policy Reminder September 2018 - Tobacco Use

Springbrook is dedicated to providing a healthy, productive, and safe environment for our employees, interns, volunteers, visitors, and individuals receiving services. 

The purpose of this policy is to provide a work environment free of the use of tobacco products at each Springbrook location, vehicle, or company sponsored meeting or event. The personal health hazards related to all tobacco products have been well documented. 

Springbrook is dedicated to the health, safety, and security of all employees and individuals receiving services.

For the purposes of this policy, “tobacco” is defined to include: cigarettes, cigars, pipes and any other smoking product; dip, chew, snuff, snus and any other smokeless tobacco product; and nicotine delivery devices, such as e-cigarettes and vaporizers. FDA-approved nicotine replacement therapy products used for tobacco cessation are excluded from this definition.

This policy applies to all employees, interns, volunteers, contractors, and visitors.

Tobacco use is not permitted on the Main Campus or Oneonta Campus during working or non-working hours

Tobacco use in the Community Homes and Norwich Day Habilitation departments is regulated by OPWDD. All Tobacco use in the community home and the day habilitation location is prohibited and any tobacco use must take place a minimum of thirty (30) feet from the community home or day habilitation location.  

Springbrook Vehicles:

Tobacco use is not permitted in any Springbrook vehicle at any time. New York State’s, Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA) indicates that a company vehicle is considered a workplace and is subject to the CIAA. 

Springbrook Sponsored Event:

Tobacco use is not permitted when attending a Springbrook event which includes, but is not limited to:

community activities with individuals receiving services, luncheons, meetings, or awards dinners. 

Department supervisors and managers are expected to educate employees about this policy and ensure that the policy is implemented and enforced. Compliance with this policy is expected and employees who violate this policy will be subject to current corrective action procedures.
